After the horrifying incident of Nirbhaya gang-rape case, and the much-needed
amendment of the criminal laws in India, one would expect the number of rape
cases to plummet. However, the stringent laws have failed to create a deterrent
effect, probably due to lack of awareness about the same. Recently, in a
gruesome reminder of the Nirbhaya incident, a 45-year-old widow was gang-raped
and brutalized with an iron rod in Sidhi District of Madhya Pradesh. She
was grievously injured and was bleeding continuously while she was being
shifted from two hospitals, covering a distance of about 120 km.
The victim made a modest living by running a tea shop. On the night of the
incident, she was asleep in her hut, while one of the accused knocked at her
door and asked for water. When she said there was none, he barged into her hut,
and raped her, and later brutalized her with an iron rod. Presently, she is out of
danger but will take more than a week to recover. The three accused have been
arrested and are undergoing interrogation
